About this photo

The New Zealand Driver Licence photo accepted by the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi is a 35 by 45 mm portrait. The NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi takes your photo at the counter when you apply, so a photo of your own is usually not needed for this document. Your head, chin to crown, should measure 32 to 36 mm on the print. There is no upload step: the photo is handed in as a print with the paper application. The background must be plain white or light grey or off-white, evenly lit and free of shadows. The photo and signature are captured by the licensing agent (AA or VTNZ) at the counter. We crop your picture to the New Zealand Driver Licence format, set the background and check the head size before you pay.
